Fatigue Analysis

A fatigue life evaluation shall be performed if the component is subject to operations involving cyclic loadings. The evaluation for fatigue is made on the basis of the number of applied cycles of a stress or strain range at a point in the component. The allowable number of cycles should be adequate for the specified design number of cycles as given in the User’s Design Specification (Design Data). Fatigue loads may be of different category i.e. thermal cyclic loads, pressure cyclic loads, vibration fatigue, etc. Rules for carrying out fatigue life cycle analysis is given in ASME Section VIII (Design by Analysis).

The life of a vessel under cyclic service is related to the intensity of the stress and the number of cycles it is exposed to. The fatigue life curves used under ASME VIII to calculate the permitted cycle life of a vessel are based on a large factor of safety compared with actual cycle life curves. We are using VIII fatigue methods to calculate an allowable number of operating cycles with a factor of safety to predict the cycle life of the vessel.
